Mariangela Longo: A Profile of Excellence at the helm of the “A. Toscanini” Conservatory

Prof. Mariangela Longo is a leading figure in the Italian academic and artistic scene, currently

Director of the State Conservatory of Music “A. Toscanini” of Ribera. Her appointment, which took place by Decree of the Minister of University and Research on 14 October 2024, sees her at the helm of the institution for the three-year academic period 2024-2027.

With solid management experience, Prof. Longo has already held the position of Director of the ISSM “A. Toscanini” for two previous terms, from 2015 to 2021. During these periods, he demonstrated remarkable leadership skills and strategic vision, achieving fundamental objectives for the development of the Conservatory. Among the most significant successes are the accreditation and launch of twenty-one new First and Second Level Academic Courses, the establishment of Preparatory Courses and the reshaping of training. Under his direction, the number of academic and international students increased tenfold and the Institute obtained a new state-of-the-art headquarters. A very important milestone was also the drafting and completion of the project for the nationalization of the Institute, which ended with a positive outcome.

A Strong Commitment to Artistic Production and Research:

Prof. Longo is a driving force in artistic production and musical research. He is currently the artistic-scientific referent of the winning project “Suite of the Temples for Osaka Expo 2025”, an initiative of international resonance.

As Artistic Director of the Concert Seasons of the “Toscanini” and responsible for the Production activity, he has been able to weave collaborations and obtain important funding. The Conservatory has become an official partner of the Italian and European “Festa della Musica”, collaborating with prestigious bodies such as the Italian Representation of the European Commission, the Ministry of Culture and RAI. These partnerships have led to the creation of numerous research and artistic production events, often presented at national press conferences and filmed by Raiplay or European channels.

Among the most significant projects she conceived and directed are:

  • “Global Learning II and III” (2021-2022), musical modules funded by the Sicilian Region, which led to the creation of “LA SUITE DEI TEMPLI”, a jazz symphonic work in world premiere, recorded and published by the Conservatory.
  • The non-EU Erasmus project “New Music for Brass and Percussion Ensemble” (2019), carried out with the Petroszavodsk Conservatory (Russian Federation), which has obtained significant funding from INDIRE. The project has also been re-proposed and financed for the two-year period 2020-2022, with a new partner in Georgia.
  • In 2024, it obtained funding of over €42,000 for the international project KA171, in collaboration with Egyptian (Luxor University) and Lebanese (Notre Dame University Louaize) institutions, aimed at expanding the “Suite of the Temples”.
  • Also in 2024, he contributed to the realization of Mozart’s Opera studio “Don Giovanni”, using Erasmus funds for Short Mobility, in collaboration with the Conservatories of Trapani and Florence and the Professional Classical Symphony Orchestra of Coimbra. The opera was successfully performed in Coimbra with a “sold out” and great appreciation of the public.

Experience and Awards:

Pianist by training (graduated with 10 cum laude from the “V. Bellini” Conservatory in Palermo in 1990) and with high specializations with masters of the caliber of Aldo Ciccolini and Bruno Mezzena , Prof. Longo boasts a prolonged concert activity both in Italy and abroad, as a soloist and chamber musician. She has been awarded several times in national and international piano competitions.

Since 2018/19, he has also been an ANVUR expert (National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System), holding the role of President of the Commission of Evaluation Experts (CEV) for the accreditation of new AFAM Courses.

During her directorships, Prof. Longo has received numerous awards and public awards for her commitment and achievements, including the Ettore Gaiezza Award (2015), the Buttitta Award (2018) and the Kalsa Palermo Award (2022). She was also included among the 12 most authoritative figures in the Agrigento area in 2023 by the newspaper “La Sicilia”.

With a deep knowledge of the AFAM sector and a tireless dedication to music and education, Mariangela Longo continues to lead the “A. Toscanini” Conservatory to new heights of excellence.
